Natural GasNatural gas articles and info.. Look around!

CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas. Unlike LP gas, the gas in a CNG tank is NOT a liquid. It is simply compressed vapor. Because it is always a vapor, the only thing we need to do to burn it is reduce the pressure and add air. We don't need to worry about vaporizing a liquid first like we do with gasoline or diesel. In cold weather, a CNG car will start easily every time. In order to liquify Natural gas, you would have to cool it to 140 degrees below freezing!

CNG will be the next fuel for several reasons

  • It is available in large quanties
  • We already have a national distribution system to many homes in America
  • It burns hotter than gasoline or diesel, the only fuel with more kick is pure hydrogen
  • It burns cleaner than gasoline or diesel
  • It is a safer fuel for use in a motor vehical

A GGE is a Gallon of  Gas Equivilant. The only fair way to rate one kind of fuel against the other is to use the amout of heat or BTUs that a known volume would generate. A GGE of Natural gas produces EXACTLY the same number of horsepower as a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline. On the other hand, a GGE of natural gas weighs considerably LESS than a gallon of gas. If all other things were equal (which they are not, see below) the car would be lighter, it would in theory at least, get better miles per gallon.

A GDE is a Gallon of Diesel Equivelant. The primary reason why diesel is the fuel of choice in big rigs is that it packs more punch per pound of fuel. A hundred pounds of fuel will go further than a hundred pounds of gasoline. This is why it takes more Cubic feet of Natural gas to equal a GDE. On the other hand, because a GDE of natural gas weighs less than a gallon of diesel, the vehicle should go further because of the lower weight.

Because the fuel tanks that hold natural gas weigh more than those that hold gasoline or diesel, unless you carry a lot of fuel , (like in a big rig) the weight issue is usually a wash. On the other hand, in a small car (like an electric hybred that typically only carries less than ten gallons of gas) the weight difference is only a few pounds..

Because Natural gas burns hotter than gasoline or diesel, a properly retro-fitted car should get better performance. Regular carburation, will usually yield performaces similar to turbo-charged diesel engine.
